In Kono there are perhaps 25 diamond dealers or middle men that both fund crews to hunt the countryside for diamonds and or accept the walk in freelancers who have found diamonds.  Small diamonds are a common enough find in this region and for some people it can be a decent though hard won living.  The dealers sell the diamonds to other dealers in either Monrovia or Freetown who then sell to overseas buyers in Europe. This is a secret and hidden business and I was unable to photograph in any of the diamond stores.  These diamonds, which fund the wars in many parts of Africa, are known as Blood Diamonds and are illegal in the diamond exchanges of Europe, however, once they are on the open market they are almost impossible to trace.
